Crocodiles are different from alligators. People can be able to tell the difference between the two because the alligator has a longer, snout. Crocodiles have bottom teeth and we can see them when the mouth the closed too. Crocodiles have longer, skinnier snouts than from the alligator. Also, unlike the alligator, the fourth tooth on the bottom mouth of the crocodile is visible when its mouth is closed. Adult crocodiles are 7 to 15 feet long and weigh 150 to 450 pounds.

.............................................................Crocodiles............................................

(American crocodiles, Nile crocodiles)
The crocodile is big reptile that lives in the water. Crocodile live in only fresh water. The usual places that this reptile lives in is everywhere around Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. In this project, I will only look at the American Crocodile and Nile crocodiles. Today, there are about 2000 crocodiles that live in Florida, United States. This is the place where there are the most crocodiles in America. There are a lot of Nile crocodiles that are becoming endangered.

Interesting facts...

1. A large crocodile that weigh 900kg (2000 pounds) can survive a long time without eating.
2. If baby crocodiles are in danger, the adult female may pick it up and put it into her mouth for protection.
3. When baby crocodiles are born, mom or dad may help it get out of the egg by rolling it in their mouth. This breaks the shell.
4. The temperature of the area will make the crocodile boy or girl. If hot, it will be boy, if colder, it will be girl.
5. Crocodiles are the closest living relatives to birds.

The American crocodiles

What they look like...

A crocodile is a reptile with four short legs, a big powerful tail and really tough skin. On the back, the back is very rough because it is wavey back. It also have big snout with very big strong teeth. they are normally 71/2-12 feet long and weights 150-450 pounds. Their skin is dark green like dirty water. The color of their skin make them hard to be see. They have eyes on the head so their body can hide in the water so they can hunt well. When they are swimming, they swim fast because they keep their legs close to their bodies. When they are walking, they crawl on their stomach or walk with their legs. Crocodiles look like they walk slow, but they are very fast. When they walk fast, they can keep their speed for a short time.

Where they live...

They live in deep salty waters such as ponds, coves, and lagoons. These areas do not have waves. There are less crocodiles than before because humans hunt and kill them. Now, many people make new homes for crocodiles and there have been more of them.

What they eat...

When they are babies, they eat small bugs like spiders, flies, snails. When they grow a little bigger, they eat small mammals, shellfish and fish. When they are adults they lots of meat like fish, turtles, snakes, and birds. Crocodiles would even eat anything such as sticks, rocks, pop cans and humans too! These reptiles are very sneaky. They crawl very slow to catch animal with the mouth. When they got the food in the mouth, it is very hard to get away because they go underwater until die. When the animal die, it will eat it. This is called the death roll.

Population...

There are approximately 2000 crocodiles that live in Florida. This is the area that has the most in United States. There are many people hunting crocodiles for their skin to make bags, belts and shoes for a lot of money. Now there are not as many crocodiles anymore

how long do they live...

It is hard to know the crocodile age, but we know approximately. Crocodiles that live in the wild live around 70 years on average, but if they live in the zoo, they live a little longer.

What threatens them...

The young crocodiles should be scared of predators such as animals that are bigger. When they grow bigger, adult crocodiles should not be scared of anything because only humans hunt for them. They are hunted by people who want their skin. Also, many people destroy their homes so now they have a smaller and lesser place to live.

Population...

It is hard to know how many Nile crocodiles there is because they are everywhere. Scientists have counted them by taking the eggs and taking care of them in their science office. When they babies come out of the eggs, the scientist put outside again so they could grow in wild. These scientists are also called crocodile farmers. They help for the crocodiles to grow more because many of them die as babies.

How long do they live...

Just like the American crocodiles, it is hard to know age of Nile crocodile because it is hard. Many crocodiles live 70 years, but if they are taken care of in the scientitst office or live with farmers or zoo, then they will live for longer.
