Welcome

Welcome to Tony's, James's and Jeff's page about the heart! We are PUMPED(get it?... lame joke) to show you guys our experiment and what we learned about the heart.

*What Is The Heart?*

The heart is an organ that is responsible for pumping blood through the whole body. It has two atriums and two ventricles. It works like a cycle. First, the blood with poor oxygen goes into the right atrium and then through the right ventricle. The right ventricle then pumps the blood into the lungs and picks up oxygen. The blood with the fresh oxygen goes to the left atrium and gets distributed though the body through the left ventricle. So to make it simple, the right side of the heart receives the blood and the left side gives it to the rest of the body.
Without the heart, no blood and nutrients will be pumping through the body and that person will die. Many deaths caused by the heart is because of the rhythm being disturbed. That is why keeping your heart healthy is is really important!

*Ineteresting facts*

- Over a lifetime, the human heart beats over 2.5 billion times!
- In 70 years, a human heart would already have pumped 193 million liters of blood though the whole body.
- Diseases of the heart is the leading cause of death in America.
- Blood is 78% water!
- Many people say the heart is on the left side of their chest but that's not really true! The bottom of the heart is just tilted to the left side of the chest so that is why you may feel the pulse better on the left side of your chest!

*Our First Experiment*

*Our Heart Rate*
Here is our regular heart rate.
James - 78
Jeff - 74
Tony - 73

*Our Hypothesis*

Jeff
My hypothesis are that Rock and Pop makes heart rate faster and classic music makes heart rate slower. I think Rap song will makes heart rate faster than other types of songs, Rock songs will makes heart rate faster too, but less than Rap. I think Classis will makes heart rate slower than othert types of songs. Here is list of songs we are going to listen.
#1Over and Over (Rock)
#2Balla baby (Rap)
#3Canon in D (Classic)

Tony
We are going to listen three kinds of music.
#1Over and Over (Rock)
#2Balla baby (Rap)
#3Canon in D (Classic)
I think rock , rap , classic are able to change our heart rate when we listen to these kinds of music. So we chose it.
First, We are gonna count our heart rate when we are doing nothing. I think rock song will make our heart rate faster than when we are doing nothing.Becasue rock songs are very fast and loud. Most of the Classic songs are quiet and slow. So, it is gonna make our heart rate slower.
I think rap will make our heart rate faster than when we are doing nothing.

James
Here are the different kinds of music we are going to listen to. I listed them from what I think will cause the heart rate to go up the most to what will cause the heart rate to go down the lowest.
#1Over and Over (Rock)
#2Balla baby (Rap)
#3Canon in D (Classic)
I chose rock first because many rock songs have some sort of percussion and drums in it. Sometimes even bass. Rap usually has a continuous beat or rhythym that can include bass. Classic is my last choice and I think most people will agree with me on this one because classical music is uaually slow and soothing.

*Our experiment*

Project Experimentation : First of all, the first step was to count our pulse while doing nothing. Then, each of our group members listened to different kinds of music including rock, rap and classic.

*Our conclusion*

Result
- James : normal 80, Rock 81, Rap 82, Classic 78
- Jeff : normal 82, Rock 82, Rap 83, Classic 82
- Tony : normal 79, Rock 80, Rap 79, Classic 78

(James)
In the end, we learnt that different types of music doesn't affect people's heart rates. What we could have improved on was to write a proper purpose for our experiment.

(Jeff)
My Hypothesis was the Rap makes people's heart rate faster than anyother song, and Rock makes heart rate fast too. However, they did not have many change with heart rate. My hypothesis was wrong. I think the heart rate was not changed, because those songs that listen was songs that we listen at regular life. Every songs that we listen many times we know the patern, so the heart rate doesn't chage.

(Tony)
My hypothesis was wrong. I learned that music can't change people's heart rates.

*Our second experiment*

Our second experiment is to test our heart rate after we drink different types of drinks.

*Our purpose*

Our purpose of this second experiment is to prove our hypothesis right. We also did this experiment for our own interest to see the results. We thought this experiment would be original and fun to do.

*Our Hypothesis*

(Jeff)
My hypothesis is that cold water, boiled water, and coke make our heart rate change. However, orange juice, and milk will not make our heart rate change. I think coke makes heart rate faster than other types of drinks. Secondly, hot water will makes heart rate fater too. I think cold water makes our heart rate slower than other types of drink. Here is the list of drinks that we will use in experiment.
- Cold water(with ice in it)
- Boiled water(hot)
- Coke
- Orange juice

(James)
My hypothesis is that cold water will slow down our heart rates while hot water will increase ours.
Milk and orange juice should not change the heart rate. Coke will increase our heart rate the most out of all the drinks.

(Tony)
My hypothesis is that hot water will decrease our heart rates otherwise, cold water will increase our heart rates. And the other drinks will increase our heart rates.

*Our experiment#2*

Project experimentation
Step#1 : Drink one type of drink
Step#2 : Check the heart rate per minute

*Our Conclusion*

Result

-Regular heart rate-( James-78 )(Jeff-74) ( Tony-73)
-Coke- (James - 84) (Jeff - 86) (Tony - 85)
-Ice cold water- (James - 64) (Jeff - 66) (Tony-68)
-Hot water- (James - 80) (Jeff - 88) (Tony-78)
-Orange juice- (James - 68) (Jeff - 68) (Tony-67)

Our hypothesis was a good guess and for the most part, we were right! So we learned that cold beverages decreases people's heart rate and hot beverages are vice versa. Drinks with caffeine increase peopel's heart rate even if it is cold. What we could have improvved on was maybe the amount of people we tested. We only tested people in our group (3 people) and we could have asked for volunteers. The tough part of this project was the patience of drinking one beverage and then waiting for 15 minutes before we get to drink the next one.
